At Closet POSSIBLE, we are proud to be a part of the New Jersey and Greater Philadelphia communities, and we also know that being part of a community means giving back whenever you can. Our founder Barry Curewitz started Closet POSSIBLE as a way to help people organize their homes, but he also wanted to leverage his success into a way to help the less fortunate. As it turns out, organizing closets and other rooms has a natural synergy with helping those in need.
If your home is feeling a bit disorganized, Spring is the perfect time to do some cleaning and help others at the same time. Read on to find out how you can make your organization efforts count double by cleaning up the clutter from your home and making donations to the most vulnerable people in your community.
Keep, Donate, or Throw Away?
As you get started on your Spring organization project, make three piles. One will be for items you want to keep. One will be for items that are too damaged to be suitable for donation. The third pile will be for items that you have never used, or that still have plenty of good years left in them. These will be the items you donate to charity.
Unused or gently used clothing is one of the most needed categories of items suitable for donation, but there are some others. Winter jackets and socks are two types of clothing that are always needed at homeless shelters and other charities. If you have a winter jacket that never got much use, or you have a few bags of socks you never wore, put those in the donation pile. Basic t-shirts, jeans, sweaters, and shoes are also in high demand at charitable organizations.
Toiletries are another category of items you may want to donate. Did you buy multiple bottles of shampoo on sale, but you don’t like the scent? Do you have extra unopened bars of soap or tubes of toothpaste? Items like these can make a big difference in the lives of less fortunate people.
Non-perishable food is also critical to the mission of many charities. Once a year, go through your pantry and choose items like canned goods, rice, flour, and pasta that will be of tremendous benefit to individuals and families in need.
Want to Donate? Closet POSSIBLE Can Help
As part of our partnership with HomeFront, a New Jersey-based organization that helps local families break the cycle of poverty, we ask our customers to select some items for donation when they are cleaning out their closets before every organization system installation. Not only does this make the organizing process much easier, but it also allows us to help out in a very direct way. We will be happy to take any items you select for donation to HomeFront so they can be distributed to the New Jersey families who need them the most. We will even arrange for these donations to be documented so you can claim them on your taxes.
