Beach balls, sunscreen tubes, toys, towels, sunglasses, hats, snacks, and picnic blankets — what do all these things have in common? They may remind you of vacations and beach trips; however, they may also remind you of items left lying around the house in the summer.
With the kids being out of school and the family taking trips, you may not have as much time as you’d like to keep the house clean throughout the season. But with just a little organization, you can make your home look less like a summer storm and more like a seasonal oasis.
Finding the Fix
Where do you even begin when you want to get your house in order over the summer? Start by following these steps:
1. Go through last year’s school supplies
At the end of the school year, it’s inevitable for your kids to bring back an assortment of old folders, notebooks, and pencil cases. And, chances are, a lot of it ends up on their floor or the dining room table.
Some of the supplies may still be in good shape to save for the next year, but other items might be ready for the curb. Recycle old notebooks and folders but keep what you can. Since you won’t have to worry about it for a few months, store all of these items, in addition to the new supplies you’ll buy during the summer, in a place that’s out of the way. Just make sure you remember where you kept all of it so you won’t be scrambling in September.
2. Tackle the garage.
While it’s a great idea to keep outdoor toys, tools, and garden supplies in the garage instead of somewhere indoors, you should make sure to keep it all in order.
Get bins or hooks for designated categories. For example, label one box “toys,” so the kids know where to go to find what they need — and where to put it all back when they’re done.
3. Pack a “summer kit”
Instead of running through the house to find your sunglasses and your kids’ bathing suits, store it all in one place. Make a summer kit — which can be a bin, basket, or bag — that will have all the items you need to go to the park, on a hike, or in the pool. This way, you’ll never have to worry about finding it all.
These are just a few steps you can take to keep yourself organized throughout the summer. By categorizing items and keeping them in specific areas, you’ll be surprised how tidy your home can look.
